Roggeveld Enduro
This five day, basic farm road Enduro of 87 km, begins and ends in Calvinia and provides an enjoyable trail throughout the Northern-Roggeveld. The name “Roggeveld” is derived from ‘wild rye’ and was once in abundance throughout the well-known Roggeveld Mountains, a mountain range in South Africa. The range stretches between two towns, Calvinia and Sutherland, east and north-east from the Tankwa Karoo National Park. The mountain range receives an average rainfall of 200 mm per year and its higher elevations are amongst the coldest places in South Africa.
The Roggeveld landscape looks barren at first glance but challenging yourself and observing the patterns, colours and little plants, will make it worthwhile. This is where you use your eyes, learn to spot small things in life and breathe in the wide-angled space around you.
It is a fascinating experience to reach the escarpment along this hike. At sunset, one can feel and see the raw, rugged piece of earth known as the Tankwa Karoo.
In the Roggeveld, the hot summer days are usually soothed by a cool breeze. Nights are chilly and invigorating, equipping you with energy for the next day. Due to absence of air pollution and no reflected lights, the nights are astonishingly brilliant.
Don't miss out on the staggering experience and memories of wide spaces and the night skies of the starry Karoo.
